The DoD Short method has since been copied into similar products. More recently, a smart person asked me "are you really doing this correctly", I reviewed the specification, and produced the "DoD Short" method. It was never fixed because security vendors don't admit mistakes, and because there is pressure to keep doing things the way that everybody else is doing it. Way back, the first guy to implement the DoD method did it wrong, but everybody after him copied his work because it was first to get traction. You need to find the master copy of that entire document, improve your lawyer-speak, and follow its references. DoD document and it doesn't outline any procedure for wiping data.
